The Best Announcements From PlayStation Showcase 2021

After a long hiatus, fans finally got a glimpse into the future of PlayStation.

It’s been a full year since we’ve heard anything significant out of the Sony camp. Sure, there have been numerous State of Play events sprinkled throughout the last 12 months, but nothing like a big, meaty E3-style conference. Indeed, the last major Sony showcase was when we found out the price and launch date of the PS5! With expectations through the roof, Sony had some hungry appetites to satisfy. Here are all the best announcements Sony revealed at this year’s PlayStation Showcase.

Knights of the Old Republic Remake

Lucasfilm Games started things off on the right foot with a tease for Knights of the Old Republic Remake. Longtime Star Wars developer, Aspyr, will be at the helm for this remake that which was given no release date. An official PlayStation blog post did confirm that KOTOR Remake will be a console launch exclusive whenever it ends up releasing. Taking a beloved game like KOTOR is no small task but Aspyr seems up to the task. “Our hope is to give both series newcomers and long-term fans an experience that can live alongside the very best modern releases”, writes Ryan Treadwell, lead producer at Aspyr. We’re rebuilding it from the ground up with the latest tech to match the groundbreaking standard of innovation established by the original, all while staying true to its revered story.”

Wolverine

In perhaps the most shocking announcement of the show, Insomniac Games came out of nowhere and surprised audiences with a sneak tease at an all new Wolverine game. Led by creative leads Brian Horton and Cameron Christian (Spider-Man: Miles Morales), the team at Insomniac hopes “to not only respect the DNA of what makes the character so popular, but also look for opportunities to make it feel fresh and truly reflect the Insomniac spirit” writes Insomniac over on the PlayStation blog. Again, no date was given for Wolverine, but considering we got a release year for this next game on our list, we’re assuming we won’t see the hot headed mutant until at least 2023.

Spider-Man 2

Defying all odds, Insomniac Games once again carried a PlayStation showcase with a double dip of excellent showings (the first time being Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart). Hot off the heels of the Wolverine megaton reveal, they released a short look at Spider-Man 2. The clip shows Peter and Miles teaming up and using their respective powers as a mysterious voice narrates asking for anyone who can stand up and match his power. “Yes, we will” is heard from the ally way as Venom finally reveals himself to the Insomniac Spider-Man universe. In a move sure to please fans, Spider-Man 2 will be led by Spider-Man 1 creative director, Bryan Intihar and game director Ryan Smith. Finally, the trailer closed out with a launch window of 2023. We’ll have to wait and see if Insomniac and PlayStation can deliver on that date.

God of War: Ragnarök

At long last! We finally got a glimpse at the much anticipated God of War: Ragnarök. In the long trailer Kratos and Atreus visit many new locales. The game is confirmed to include all nine realms whereas players only were allowed to visit 6 in the original God of War. The game takes place several years after the events of the first one and Atreus still has many questions about his heritage. With a shaky relationship with Kratos still developing, the two will have to overcome the harsh cold of Fimbulwinter as they continue their journey. Expect God of War: Ragnarök at some point in 2022.

Project Eve

From South Korean developer, Shift Up, comes Project Eve, a high-action game that certainly evokes Bayonetta vibes. Audiences got a long look at the combat system and enemies players will be encountering when they take control of Eve. The not-too-distant-future, post-apocalyptic setting may be a worn road, but the team at Shift Up seem to have nailed the high combat and over the top nature of games of this ilk. We’ll keep our finger on the pulse of how Project Eve progresses.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection

The much rumored remastering of Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy have come to fruition. The two instant classics from Naughty Dog will be packaged together and given the full PS5 treatment. Not only that, but the game will also release for PC shortly after it’s launch on PS5 in Spring of 2022.
